How to Use the 'Amphibious' Vehicle Capability

Vehicle Capabilities are attributes that give vehicles special capabilities.  Raging Tiger introduces a number of new and highly versatile Vehicle Capabilities.  The second capability that Raging Tiger adds is the 'Amphibious' attribute.  This attribute encompasses everything from hovercraft to battleships.  It gives vehicles the ability to traverse water terrain and, optionally, restricts them to this terrain.

This attribute is intended for ground vehicles.  It will be ignored if combined with the 'Fixed Wing' or 'Rotary Wing' attribute.  It will, however, coexist with the 'Limited Mobility' attribute, if also applied.

Add an 'Amphibious' Capability to a Vehicle:

Here, we assume that you have already created or opened a vehicle for editing.  For instructions on how to do this, see Create a new vehicle from the ATF Power Toolkit tutorial.  The steps are the same in the Raging Tiger Power Toolkit.  These steps begin once the 'Vehicle Edit' dialog has been opened and the vehicle is ready for editing.

In order for this capability to work correctly, we must have water.  To see more about adding water to maps, see 'Add the 'Water' Attribute to a Terrain Type'.

1. We are creating an 'LCAC' (Landing Craft, Air-Cushioned).  Again, we have already opened a vehicle for editing.  Select 'Add' from the 'Special Attributes' window.

2. Select 'Amphibious' and 'OK'.

3.  The 'Amphibious Attribute' window describes all of the data pertaining to this vehicle's ability to traverse water.

  • Travels on water only?  If checked, the vehicle will not be able to move onto or travel across land.

  • Travels on Shallow Water Only?  Shallow water is terrain of a type which has both the 'Water' attribute and a move reduction of 0.0.  This does not prevent the vehicle from traveling on land.

  • Travels on Deep Water Only?  Shallow water is terrain of a type which has both the 'Water' attribute and a move reduction of less than  0.0 (a negative number).  This does not prevent the vehicle from traveling on land.

NOTE: Do not use both 'Travels on Shallow Water Only' and 'Travels on Deep Water Only'.  The result will be a vehicle that cannot travel on water (the default).

  • Deep Water Speed, Shallow Water Speed.  The speed in meters per second that a vehicle can travel on the specified type of water.  Values for types of water a vehicle can not travel on will be ignored.

Next Step: Add the 'Water' Attribute to a Terrain Type
