1. SITUATION:

    A. ENEMY FORCES:

     1. Our covert build up has been mostly successful. It was not until
the Marine LSV's arrived three days ago that Iraqi's detected our
presence and intentions. They have not had time to consolidate and
execute a spoiling attack. They have been forced to use their
fleeting time to dig-in and prepare for an attack.

     2. 1 CAV faces the 12th Republican Guard Division (RGD). The enemy's
mission is to defend NET 192300JAN03 to prevent penetration of the
first divisional echelon and, on order, counterattack to destroy the
1st CAV DIV. He is positioned with two Republican Guard Regiments
(RGR's) abreast, the 9 RGR in the west and the 10th in the east. A
third RGR, the 11th is positioned behind the lead RGR's.

     3. In our sector, the 9 RGR will defend with two Republican Guard
Battalions (RGB's) forward, the 31st and 32nd, and one back, the
30th. These RGB's are at approximately 95 % strength with
     approximately a 9 / 27 / 10 (nine T-72S's, twenty-seven BTR-60PB's,
and ten BRDM-2's with AT-5's). The center of gravity for enemy RGB's
is dismounted infantry armed with RPG-7's and AT-5's. Expect each
battalion to have as many as 300 dismount soldiers defending in
strongpoints throughout the zone. Each MRR has a RAG consisting of 2
BN's of 2S3 at 18 tubes each. The DAG has been destroyed by
fixed-wing deep strikes. The enemy is expected to have no SOKOL or
     fixed-wing capability.

     2. The most likely course of action is that the enemy will defend
with 2 RGB's abreast along PL MICHAEL. Each RGB will have a CAR
(Combined Arms Reserve) of 3 / 0 / 3 which he will employ once the
point of penetration is known. The RGD is holding one MRB in reserve.
If a BCT establishes a serious breach on either flank of the 12th
RGD, the reserve MRB will be used to reinforce enemy defenses.
Otherwise, the reserve will be employed to counter-attack into 2 BCT,
1 CD's zone (our adjacent unit on the right, division main effort) in
order to support the defense of BASRAH.

    B. FRIENDLY FORCES:

     1. Higher Mission. 1st Cavalry Division conducts an attack, NET
100200JAN03, to destroy the 12th RGD, sieze key bridges and
intersections vicinity BASRAH, and cut off Iraqi LOC's to the Persian Gulf.

     2. To our left, 1st ID attacks in zone to secure the left flank of
the 1 CD attack. To our right, 2 BCT, 1 CAV attacks as the division
main effort to destroy the 10th RGR in order to seize key bridges and
intersections vicinity BASRAH. To our rear the, 3 BCT has the mission
of follow and assume the mission of 2 BCT, 1 CAV, should they be
     unsuccessful in seizing BASRAH.

    C. WEATHER:

     1. Winds are expected to be out of the west at approximately 10 miles
     per hour

     2. The hours of daylight are as follows. Before morning nautical
twilight (BMNT) will begin at 0545. Sunrise will be at 0634. Sunset
will be at 1829. Early evening nautical twilight (EENT) will end at
1929. Moonrise on the early morning of 20JAN02 is at 0100.
Illumination will be at 100%, which will strongly favor the Iraqi's,
who have a distinct disadvantage in night vision devices.

   2. MISSION. 1 BCT, 1 CAV (Ironhorse) attacks in zone NET 200200JAN03

     1. Key Tasks:

      a. Force 9 RGR to commit its reserve in our sector, rather than
diverting it to 2 BCT's sector, by attriting their combat power below 10%.

      b. Seize OBJ's GREMLIN, GOUHL <not

quickly as possible, in order to force the commitment of the 9 RGR
reserve. Bypass any dismounted strong points you encounter en route
and return to defeat them after these objectives have been seized.

      c. Destroy the 9 RGR's
mounted threat and cripple his dismounted threat to prevent him from
      hindering follow on divisions.

    B. CONCEPT OF THE OPERATION.

     1. Maneuver. This operation will be conducted in 3 phases.

      a. Phase One. This phase begins at 200155JAN03. Preparation fires
begin (see Fires) from 1-82 FA, A / 3-21 FA (MLRS), and fixed wing aircraft.

      b. Phase Two. This phase begins at 200200JAN03. 1 BCT, 1 CAV crosses
the LD (PL JASON) and attacks to destroy the 9th Republican Guard
Regiment (RGR). Brigade will attack with three battalions abreast
(from east to west) TF 2-5 CAV (the main effort), TF 2-8 CAV, and TF
1-12 CAV. This phase ends when battalions have seized OBJ's GREMLIN,
      GOUHL <not
       shown>, and GODZILLA <not

        omitted>

     2. Fires. The commander's intent for fires is to weight the main
effort, TF 2-5 CAV with 155mm SP fires from 1-82 FA (DS, 155mm SP)
and fixed wing aircraft (3 X A-10 Thunderbolt) to facilitate their
attack on OBJ GREMLIN. Reinforcing fires from A / 3-21 FA (MLRS, R)
will be used deep against second echelon 30th Republican Guard
Battalion to prevent it from reinforcing first echelon battalions. A
/ 3-21 FA is also the counterfire headquarters.

      a. Phase One and Two. During these phase, priority of fires for 1-82
FA goes to TF 2-5 CAV. A / 3-21 FA (MLRS) will be dedicated,
initially, to preparation fires against second echelon RGB. After
preparation fires, MLRS will be dedicated to counterfire and
suppressing the RAG. During these phases, TF 2-5 CAV is allocated a
total of 3 fixed wing sorties (A-10 Thunderbolt). The CFL
(coordinated fire line) for this phase will be PL MICHAEL.

      b. Phase Three.
