The garrison on Pebble Island consisted of ground crew from the Naval Air
Command and 1 / H / 3 Marine Bn. There were 4 Beechcraft T34C Mentors, 6
Pucara and a Skyvan stationed on the island at the time of the raid.

On the night of 12/13 May a patrol from Boat Troop, 22 SAS, crossed to Pebble
Island, set up an OP on high ground east of the airstrip and carried out
close recces of the settlement and airfield. They sent the following signal to
the Task Force. "Squadron attack tonight. Landing Phillips Cove. 11 aircraft.
Real. No further information. Confirm ETA". The message they received back
said "ETA 2330hrs".

Hermes with the destroyer Glamorgan and frigate Broadsword were detached from
the task force and made best speed towards Pebble Island. Onboard were troops
from Mobility Troop, Mountain Troop and Air Troop of D Squadron 22 SAS and
NGFO5 from 148 Btty 29 Cdo Regt Royal Artillery. Just before midnight 45 men
were loaded into 4 Sea king helicopters. At 0045hrs on 14 May they touched down
at Phillips Cove. The raiders moved to their forming up position dropping a
mortar team off on high ground on the way.

Because of a lack of guides, Mobility Tp did not make the final RV. Plans
were quickly changed and it was decided that Mountain and Air troops would
raid the airfield. From their FUP near the eastern end of the runway, they
spread out with Mountain Tp on the left and Air Tp on the right. H Hour,
0215hrs arrived and on time high explosive rounds fell on the west of the airfield fired by HMS Glamorgan. Air Tp provided covering fire while Mountain
Tp attacked the aircraft. The mortar team fired illumination rounds. Argentine
resistance was slow and confused but once they realized they were under attack
they blew a large mine placed in the runway. This inflicted a second casualty
on the SAS raiders (the other being wounded earlier by shrapnel).

By 0245 the raiders had regroup at their forward RV. When everyone was
accounted for they made their way back to Phillips Cove by 0530 for extraction.

Outcome: Air threat from Pebble Island neutralized.

Casualties: Two SAS wounded.
